If you did not get a Social Security card as part of the immigration process, you will need to apply for one in the US in order to get a job, collect Social Security benefits and get some other government services.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) says you should keep your Social Security card in a safe place with your other important papers and avoid giving it out unnecessarily.
It’s important to know what documents are needed before you visit your local SS office. Please note : All documents submitted must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies or notarized copies of documents are not acceptable, neither is a receipt showing you applied for the document. All documents must be current (not expired).
You will need the following:
Only Relating to Taxes : If you need a number for tax purposes and you are not authorized to work in the United States, you can apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Visit IRS in person or call the IRS toll-free number, 1-800-TAXFORM (1-800-829-3676), and request Form W-7 (Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).
If you are assigned a number for non-work purposes, you cannot use it to work and SSA will inform DHS.
Once you have all the required documents, you may fill out and print the Application for a Social Security Card, available at https://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ . Take the application and the needed original documents to your local Social Security office. Visit https://www.ssa.gov/ to find the nearest office location and opening hours.
